Self-Containment Certification FAQs
Q: What is a self-containment certification?
A self-containment certification proves your campervan or motorhome meets NZ standards for responsible waste and water management, allowing you to camp in designated freedom camping areas.
Q: Who needs a self-containment certificate?
Anyone who wants to freedom camp legally in New Zealand needs a certified self-contained vehicle that meets NZS 5465 standards.
Q: What does the inspection involve?
We check key components like your freshwater tank, grey water tank, toilet, ventilation, waste hose, and signage to ensure compliance with NZS 5465.
Q: Can you do online inspections?
Yes! We offer both in-person and online self-containment inspections, depending on your setup and location. Online inspections follow strict guidelines and are fully valid.
Q: How long does the certification last?
Self-containment certificates are valid for up to 4 years, or until modifications are made to your vehicle's plumbing or waste systems.
Q: What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
We’ll provide a list of what's needed to comply, and you can book a re-inspection once the changes are made. We're here to help guide you through it.
Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) FAQs
Q: What is an Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF)?
An EWOF certifies that your camper, caravan, or motorhome’s 230V electrical system is safe and meets NZ regulations. It's essential for connecting to powered sites.
Q: Do I need an EWOF?
Yes—if your vehicle has a 230V system or plugs into mains power at campsites, you’re legally required to have a current EWOF in New Zealand.
Q: How long is an EWOF valid for?
An Electrical WOF is valid for 4 years, unless alterations are made to the electrical system.
Q: Can you come to me for an EWOF inspection?
Absolutely. We offer mobile EWOF inspections throughout New Zealand. Just book a time and location that suits you.
Q: What if my electrical system doesn’t pass?
We’ll let you know what needs fixing and recommend a licensed electrician if needed. Once issues are resolved, we’ll complete the inspection.
